Iran urges quick delivery of emergency aid to Syria via UN

Tehran, IRNA – A senior Iranian Foreign Ministry official has called on the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Geir Otto Pedersen to speed up efforts for delivery of emergency aid to people affected by huge earthquakes in Syria.

Ali Asghar Khaji, who serves as special political affairs advisor to Iranian foreign minister, spoke to Pedersen via video conference on Tuesday to discuss the situation in Syria a day after two earthquakes left thousands of people dead in the region and in neighboring Turkey.

Iran’s embassy in Syria, which reported about the virtual meeting between Khaji and Pedersen, has coordinated the delivery of a first Iranian humanitarian cargo to Syria.

The 45-ton cargo, comprising of essential supplies like food, medicine and hygiene items, arrived in Damascus early on Tuesday.

The Monday earthquakes in southern Turkiye and northern Syria have left more than 4,400 dead and at least 16,000 others wounded, according to official reports published by the two countries.
